The remarks followed victories
“Another candidate has come up to www.discount-sell.com challenge him, and this time he’s having trouble finding out how to go after someone who is a solid conservative, who’s got a great track record of attracting independents and Democrats and winning states as a conservative,” Santorum said.
The remarks followed victories by Romney Feb. 11 in Maine’s caucuses and in a Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll, which helped the former Massachusetts governor regain some momentum after Santorum’s sweep of contests last week in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri. Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, said he expects to compete aggressively in primaries on Feb. 28 in Arizona and Romney’s home state of Michigan.
Romney said last week that Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich were “Republicans who acted like Democrats” in Washington. Santorum and Gingrich have been vying for weeks to become the chief alternative to Romney and unite the conservative Republican activists who haven’t warmed to the former Massachusetts governor’s candidacy.
CPAC Straw Poll
Romney won the non-binding Maine caucuses and a straw poll of attendees at the CPAC, an organization comprised of activists who oppose government spending, abortion rights and gay marriage. With the straw poll victory, Romney bested Santorum, who has a history of working against abortion rights, on what could have been friendly territory for the former Pennsylvania senator.
Santorum downplayed the CPAC straw poll’s importance, saying Republican candidate Ron Paul, a congressman from Texas, had won it in the past by paying for participants’ tickets. He declined to say whether the Romney campaign had rigged this year’s contest when asked yesterday on CNN’s “State of the Union” program.
“You have to talk to the Romney campaign and how many tickets they bought,” he said. Welcome to gucci outlet shop, all gucci bags and gucci shoes 2012 new arrivals are on cheap sale. Save up to 70% off! “We’ve heard all sorts of things.”
Santorum has “a history of making statements that aren’t grounded in the truth,” Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for Romney, said in an e-mail. “Mitt Romney won the CPAC straw poll and won a separate nationwide survey of conservatives conducted by CPAC organizers. Also, Mitt Romney won the Maine caucuses.”
Two-Person Race
Saying the Republican nomination contest is now a “two- person race,” Santorum said on NBC’s “Meet The Press” that he had “raised over $3 million this week alone and money continues to pour in.”
Santorum said he’s in the best position heading into primaries in Arizona and Michigan, where Romney’s father, George Romney, was governor. Santorum’s wins last week underscore his potential strength in the Midwest and Mountain West, particularly in areas with large blue-collar populations.
Romney didn’t devote many resources to the non-binding Missouri, Minnesota and Colorado. He has millions of dollars available for television advertising in the coming weeks from his campaign and a super-PAC that supports his candidacy.
Campaign Spending
Romney ended 2011 with $20 million in his campaign bank account, compared with $278,935 for Santorum, according to Federal Election Commission reports. Gingrich, a former U.S. House speaker, had $2.1 million and Texas Representative Ron Paul had $1.9 million.
Romney’s forces mounted an advertising assault after Gingrich won the South Carolina primary, helping Romney to a victory in Florida.
Santorum was asked on ABC’s “This Week” about the suggestion he’d made in his book “It Takes a Family” that women feel pressure to work outside the home because of radical feminism.
Santorum replied that his wife co-wrote the section of his book and that she felt society “looked down their nose” at her decision to give up her law practice and nursing career to raise a family.
Affirmation of Choice
“I think it’s important that women both outside the home and inside the home are affirmed for their choices they make, that they are, in fact, choices, and society, you know, treats them in a sense equally for whatever decision they make that’s best for them,” Santorum said on ABC.
Santorum also criticized President Barack Obama for his plan to require health insurers for religious-affiliated charities and hospitals to pay for contraception coverage.
“This is outrageous,” Santorum said on “Meet the Press” Gucci outlet, gucci bags, cheap gucci shoes 2012 sale. program. “I mean the bottom line is that you have the federal government now saying we are going to give you a right, and then say, by the way, we’re going to tell you how to exercise that right.”
